An Enduring Legacy: Honoring Steve Echter for his Service on CHREF Board of Directors

Steve Echter is retiring from the Board of Directors of the Colorado Horticulture Research and Education Foundation (CHREF). Steve most recently served as Treasurer and Secretary, managing foundation funds and investments, and growing the impact CHREF has on the industry. Steve’s success in his own business and his understanding of green industry needs made him an invaluable asset to the board. The board would like to congratulate Steve on his many years of service, and thank him for shaping the future of our industry for the profound impact he had on many students’ lives.

In 2023, CHREF awarded almost $45,000 in scholarships to CSU Students, which included $17,000 in new recruiting scholarships targeting students who declare horticulture as their major. We’ve seen a major increase in program numbers as well as students who come through the scholarship process.

In January 2024, CHREF will evaluate research projects—following a call for proposals—with the intent of funding new and exciting research in horticulture and keeping CSU and the Colorado horticulture industry on the map.

CHREF is continuing its “Grow the Future” campaign in 2024. In addition to our annual auction and golf tournament, CHREF will be working on more fundraising activities that will allow CHREF to make an even larger impact on the industry and its members. Check out the newly launched website here!

The Board of Directors hopes you had a great holiday season.
